The first printing press set up by William Caxton, (who was a diplomat, merchant and writer) occurred during Edward IV’s reign. Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy, who was sister to King Edward IV - was one of Caxton’s patrons. In 1478 The Canterbury Tales was published by Caxton.
There is a memorial (white stone plaque) on the wall next to Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, which was unveiled in November 1954, which states “Near this place William Caxton set up the first printing press in England.”
