See route
The Penny Black (profile of Queen Victoria) was the world’s first postage stamp used on 1st May 1840; it was Sir Rowland Hill (born in Worcestershire and buried in Westminster Abbey) who campaigned for a postal system, as prior to 1840 the postal system was complex and expensive. Sir Rowland Hill lived at 1 Orne Square, Bayswater, London - where there is a commemorative plaque in his honour. Bayswater tube station is in the area of the City of Westminster, the Circle and District Lines.
