The abolition of slavery took place during King William IV’s reign; campaign by William Wilberforce (The Slavery Abolition Act 1833). Wilberforce is buried in Westminster Abbey.
There is a memorial to William Wilberforce at 44 Cadogan Place, London SW1, which reads “William Wilberforce, 1759-1833, opponent of slavery, died here. Cadogan Place.” The area is named after Earl Cadogan and is one of the most expensive residential areas in the whole of the United Kingdom.
