The Exchequer began in the reign of King Henry I, the primary reason was to investigate money paid to the Crown; twice a year a sheriff would collect the King’s revenues. Today, the Exchequer resides at 11 Downing Street - next door to the Prime Minister.
The area around Downing Street in London was where the Romans and Anglo-Saxons conducted their business and King Canute built a palace there; the Romans referred to London as ‘Londinium’.
Downing Street was built in the 1690’s by Sir George Downing, who built 15 to 20 terraced houses; it has been the official residence of the Prime Minister since 1735. Today, Downing Street is patrolled by armed police.
Westminster Tube Station (Bridge Street) is just a 7-minute walk to Downing Street.
Westminster is in fare zone 1 and connects with the Jubilee, Circle and District Lines.
From Charing Cross railway station, it is a 10-minute walk to Downing Street.
