The Royal Courts of Justice - The Strand - King Henry II
King Henry made great changes to the country’s legal system and created a unified system - the same laws throughout the land - the ‘common law’; this put an end to local control and he extended the use of ‘writs’ - his reign is regarded as probably the most important in the legal history of England.
Visit the stunning Victorian architecture of the Royal Courts of Justice, which were designed by George Edmund Street and opened by Queen Victoria on 4th December 1882. The building took more than 8 years to complete and contains over 1000 rooms, 35 corridors and 19 courtrooms. There is a statue of King Alfred the Great above its main doors.
Admission fee - Adults £16.00 Children £14.00. Allow 2 hours for the tour. Opening times 9.00 am to 4.30 pm (Monday to Friday).
Closest tube station: Temple (Circle and District Lines), a 5-minute walk - via Arundel Street and The Strand. Holborn (Central and Piccadilly Lines) and Chancery Lane (Central Line) are also nearby.
The nearest train station is City Thameslink, which is a 10-minute walk.
