The cathedral was consecrated in 1848 and was designed by Augustus Pugin - who was born in Bloomsbury, London and was the son of a Frenchman who had left France because of the French Revolution. St George’s became the first Roman Catholic Cathedral in London since the Reformation.
The cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II, 28th May 1982, for a service of Anointing of the Sick. This visit occurred during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The cathedral is situated very close to the Imperial War Museum - a few minutes’ walk. Nearest tube station is Lambeth North, a 5-minute walk to the Cathedral.
