King Richard I, was known as ‘Richard the Lionheart' - ‘Coeur de Lion’ the Mighty Crusader; he won many battles but spent just 6 months in England during his 10-year reign.

There is a statue of King Richard I, (holding a sword) at 2 Great College Street, close to the Palace of Westminster and opposite Westminster Abbey.  The sword was damaged by a bomb in World War II but was repaired. The statue was created (1851 clay and 1856 bronze) by an Italian sculptor, Carlo Marchetti, who was a favourite sculptor of Queen Victoria; it won an award at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
