Wembley Stadium - King Edward VIII
In 1919 King Edward VIII was the President of a British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley Park, and he wished the Exhibition to include ‘a great national sports ground’. The King therefore played a part in the development of Wembley Stadium, which opened to the public in 1923 and was originally known as the ‘Empire Stadium’. It was built in 300 days at a cost of £750,000.
At Wembley Stadium there is a railway station - it is not the underground - Wembley Park is the underground station for Wembley Stadium and it is served by the Metropolitan and Jubilee Lines - Travelcard Zone 4.
