Arundel Cathedral
BN18 9AY Parson's Hill Arundel
Arundel Cathedral is in the ancient town of Arundel - Queen Elizabeth I
(Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton)
Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel, converted to catholicism in September 1584, and was committed to the Tower of London in April 1585, spending 10 years there until he died of dysentery. Philip was charged with catholic conspiracies against Queen Elizabeth I.
Today the Howard family (Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Arundel) is the most prominent English Roman Catholic family in England. In 1971 the remains of St Philip Howard (13th Earl of Arundel) were transferred from the Fitzalan Chapel (Arundel Castle) and enshrined in Arundel Cathedral. It was following the canonisation of St Philip Howard (together with the 40 English and Welsh martyrs of the Reformation - 25th October 1970) that the cathedral was dedicated to both Our Lady and St Philip Howard in 1973.
Trains depart from London Victoria Station to Arundel – travel time of journey approximately 1hr 30 mins.
