Ludlow Castle (Shropshire)

Ludlow train station is just half a mile from the town centre; the castle is situated in the centre of Ludlow town and has fantastic views, for a ruined castle there is plenty to see.  Trains depart from London’s Euston station to Ludlow town - fastest train 2 hours 13 minutes but normally 3 hours.

The castle has played a key role in English history - construction started as early as 1085 and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England - built by Walter de Lacy, a Norman nobleman who served King William I and received land in Shropshire.

The two princes (Edward and Richard - future King Edward V) lived in Ludlow castle before being sent to the Tower of London.

In 1502 Prince Arthur, son of King Henry VII and heir to the throne, died at Ludlow Castle and his heart was buried in the nearby St Laurence’s church. Prince Arthur lived at the castle with his wife Catherine of Aragon.

Open to the public most days a week - 10.00 am to 4.00 pm – check the website of the castle prior to visit.  Entrance fee – adults £8.00 and children £4.00.
