King William II - London Bridge
In 1091 bad weather damaged London Bridge, as part of its reconstruction William II introduced a specific tax to ensure continued maintenance of the Bridge and throughout the centuries sufficient proceeds have guaranteed its upkeep; the fund continues to this very day!
Walk across London Bridge into Southwark and imagine its history - it has been rebuilt/replaced numerous times - it was the Romans who built the first London Bridge. There were many buildings on London Bridge during the Tudor period. (Severed heads of alleged traitors were put on spikes on London Bridge - including William Wallace and Saint Thomas More.)
London Bridge Railway Station is the city’s oldest railway station, and its underground station is on the Northern and Jubilee Line (Borough of Southwark). The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.
