The House of York


King Edward IV, was the first King of the House of York, but the House of York descended from Edmund Langley who was the 1st Duke of York, son of King Edward III and Philippa Hainault.

Edmund Langley was born 5th June 1341 at Kings Langley and is buried - entombed in All Saints Church, Kings Langley. It was on the death of Edmund Langley’s godfather, the Earl of Surrey, that Edmund received the earl’s lands in Yorkshire. Edmund was also the ‘Earl of Cambridge’.  There is a bronze statuette of Edmund Langley on the tomb of his father King Edward III in Westminster Abbey.
