King James I of England and also James VI of Scotland

Born - June 1566, Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Claim to the Throne - Elizabeth, the last of the Tudors, died childless and James was the closest relative. James descended from Margaret Tudor, who was his great grandmother and sister of King Henry VIII.

Died - 27th March 1625 Theobalds House, Hertfordshire.  Cause of death - dysentery.

Buried - Westminster Abbey

King Charles I

Born - 19th November 1960.  Dunfermline Palace, Scotland

Claim to the Throne - second son of King James I and Queen Anne (elder brother Prince of Wales, Henry Frederick died at the age of 18 - from typhoid).

Died - 30th January 1649, Whitehall, London.  Cause of death - executed for treason.

Buried - St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle

Commonwealth

Oliver Cromwell - Lord Protector of the new English Republic

Oliver Cromwell signed the death warrant, together with 59 other men, of King Charles I. The commonwealth was from 1649 to 1660, Cromwell appointed 11 Major Generals to rule the country, but this was unpopular.    Oliver Cromwell died of septicaemia and was buried in Westminster Abbey but when the monarchy was restored, King Charles II had Cromwell’s body exhumed and reburied in a pit at Tyburn (London); his head was decapitated and placed on a spike - Westminster Hall.

Claim to the Throne - ‘The Restoration of the Monarchy’ son of King Charles I and Henrietta

Died - 6th February 1685, Whitehall Palace.   Cause of Death - apoplexy.

Born - 14th October 1633 - St James’s Palace, London

Claim to the Throne - brother of King Charles II and second surviving son of King Charles I

Died 16th September 1701, Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France

Cause of Death - Haemorrhagic Stroke.

Buried - Church of the English Benedictines, near Paris, France

King William III (and Queen Mary II)

Also known as William of Orange

Born - 4th November 1650, Binnenhof, The Hague, Holland

Claim to the Throne - William’s mother was the eldest daughter of King Charles I

Died 8th March 1702 - Kensington Palace, London.  Cause of death – pneumonia.

Buried - Westminster Abbey

Queen Anne

Born - 6th February 1665, St James’s Palace, Westminster

Claim to the Throne - daughter of King James II and Anne Hyde

Died - 1st August 1714, Kensington Palace, London.  Cause of death - stroke.
