The House of Normandy
The House of Normandy
The House of Normandy originates from Counts and Dukes of Normandy. The Viking ‘Rollo’ (Gaange Rolf) - Count of Rouen 911-927, was the first ruler of Normandy and converted to Christianity through his marriage to Poppa Bayeax, a West Frankish noblewoman. Rollo was the great-great-great grandfather of William the Conqueror.
It is reported that during the Norman Conquest approximately 8,000 Normans came to Britain, most of whom became landowners and it was during this time that many magnificent castles, churches, abbeys and cathedrals were built.
What the Normans brought to England
They were excellent builders particularly of castles, churches and cathedrals, strong followers of Christianity, wine-drinkers, abolished slavery and developed the feudal system in England. The diet of ordinary people in England changed as did cooking habits. Links between England and Scandinavian countries lessened.
